An association innovation process map makes it easier to understand what happens when and how it will happen. It assists staff in understanding their respective creation roles. And, importantly, it makes it easier to emphasize the importance of innovation during new leader onboarding. These reasons make it worth the time and effort to capture your process in a tangible way.
Here’s a simple innovation model to start with:
Articulate: Identify an opportunity, an evolution, an efficiency, a need, a problem, a question, etc. Articulating answers the “what” and “why” questions.
Craft: Create a plan, a design, a draft, a diagram, a framework, a model, etc. Crafting answers the “how” and “who” questions.
Implement: To execute, apply, perform, enact, fulfill, administer. Implementing is the “do” part of innovation.
Though most innovation is more complicated than this (and definitely not linear), the above is a starting point for associations that want to be more thoughtful about innovation.
